On May 20, 2013, the Durban University of Technology signed the Berlin Declaration on Open Access, joining in on the global drive for the free accessibility of research and all scientific knowledge. DUT is the first university of technology to sign the Declaration.
The goals of the declaration involve ensuring that knowledge that is distributed via the internet is sustainable, interactive and transparent. The DUT Library has, for the past five years, been the impetus behind DUT becoming a signatory. Professor Ahmed Bawa, DUT Vice-Chancellor and Principal signed the declaration on behalf of the University.
