Institute of Systems Science
Kevin Jan Duffy
Professor: Institute of Systems Science
Qualifications:
PhD
Area(s) of Expertise:
Prof. Kevin Duffy directs the Institute of Systems Science (iSS). The Institute of Systems Science was created out an existing Centre of Excellence to accomplish the following:
- To conduct high calibre research into real-world questions using multidisciplinary computational, mathematical and other systems methods.
- To develop methods to help understand these questions.
- To effect a technology transfer of the methods and perspectives used to a broad group of South Africans.
The Institute of Systems Science comprises a number of staff members across different departments and faculties at DUT, and staff from other universities nationally and internationally. These staff members are involved because of their common research synergies. iSS has co-ordinated 12 research staff, five postdoctoral candidates, and numbers of postgraduate masters and doctoral students from 8 different departments housed in four of the present faculties of DUT. Thus, we are performing a cross-disciplinary function in Systems Research.
Prof. Duffy’s expertise is in the application of computational systems methods to real world questions. The Institute has recently been involved in a research project funded by the African Union where they are developing decision support tools based on scientifically validated indigenous and traditional knowledge (ITK) to improved agricultural productivity and sustainability. The target is to assist in the improvement of agricultural production and economic yields.
