The department of Architecture strives to nurture a holistic approach towards education and a critical understanding of architecture and the built environment in the global environment by balancing the creative and professional aspirations with the aspirations and pragmatic requirements of contemporary society.
MISSION
- To empower students through quality teaching, research and the practical application thereof

- To instill ethical values and professional responsibility in the profession
The department of architecture enjoys validation (accreditation), by The South African Council for the Architectural Profession (SACAP), of both the National Diploma: Architectural Technology and the BTech: Architectural Technology. The Architectural Professions Act 44 of 2000 (referred to as the Act hereafter) allows for graduates to register in the following professional categories:
National Diploma: Architectural Technology: Candidate Architectural Technologist
Bachelor of Technology: Architectural Technology: Candidate Senior Architectural Technologist
Bachelor of the Built Environment in Architecture
Candidate architectural technologists / candidate senior architectural technologists are required by the Act to undergo a period of mentorship in a registered architectural practice and to pass professional practice exams in order to register as professional architectural technologists / professional senior architectural technologists respectively. Registered professionals may work in a practice or to engage in private practice.

NOTE: Phase out of information for the BTech in Architectural Technology
As gazetted in the Government Gazette, Vol. 613, No. 40123, 06 July 2016, the last date for first time entering students enrolling in academic programmes that are not aligned with the Higher Education Qualifications Sub-Framework is the 31st December 2019. This means that you will not be able to enroll for a Bachelor (BTech) Degree at DUT, or at any other institution in South Africa after this date.
