In order to register for the diploma a learner shall have passed Physical Science and/or Mathematics or its equivalent on a level 3 or math’s literacy on a level 6 (Rule pending senate approval 18/3/2010). The latter also applies to NCV Level 4 candidates.
In addition, based on a variety of assessments successful applicants will be placed into either the three year minimum mainstream programme or an extended four year minimum programme of study. The extended curriculum has been devised in order to enhance learner development and to improve the student’s chances of success.
Students are expected to visit a dental Laboratory before applying to do the course. Evidence of this visit will be requested by the department during the application process. Failure to do the visit could jeopardize your application.
Registration
In addition to the requirements of the General Rules of the Institution (see Rule G3) a learner who registers for the diploma shall be registered as a Learner Dental Technician and must conform to the requirements as laid down by the South African Dental Technicians Council in the Dental Technicians Act as amended in 1997.
Inservice training / Experiential Training / Cooperative Education
The Department of Dental Sciences requires the learner to undergo a period of experiential learning as part of the course (Dental Technology and Dental Assisting). All prescribed compulsory and elective subjects (instructional offerings) and the prescribed experiential component must be passed in order to obtain sufficient credits to qualify for the qualification.
Although the Institution undertakes to assist the learner in obtaining suitable experiential learning placement, the onus is on the learner to find an ”employer”. The employer must be accredited by the Institution for the purposes of experiential learning. An experiential learning agreement creates a separate contract between the ”employer” and the learner.
Students registered for Applied Dental Technology II are required to provide the department with proof of having completed ten (10) days in-service training at a commercial laboratory.
Students registered for Applied Dental Technology III are required to provide the department with proof of having completed twenty (20) days in-service training at a commercial laboratory.
Routes to achieve the National Diploma Dental Technology
On the basis of variety of placement assessments, successful applicants will be accepted into either a 3 year minimum or extended curriculum 4 year minimum programme of study. An extended curriculum has been devised in order to enhance learner development and to improve the students chances of successful throughput.
