Annual submission of research output to the Department of Higher Education and Training (DHET)

Research Outputs Criteria

The purpose of the DHET policy is to encourage research productivity by rewarding quality research outputs at public higher education institutions. However, the policy is not intended to measure all outputs. The intention is to enhance productivity by recognizing the major types of research output produced by higher education institutions.

Research output refers to textual output where research is understood as original, systematic investigation undertaken in order to gain knowledge and understanding. Peer evaluation of the research is a fundamental prerequisite of all recognized outputs and is the mechanism of ensuring and thus enhancing quality.

Research outputs emanating from commissioned research or contracts, and paid by contracting organisations, will not be subsidized by the DHET as per, Research Outputs Policy 2015.

Each researcher is responsible for collecting and loading their research output on the online system for outputs administration, the Research Output Management System Elements.

There are three available categories that are eligible for subsidy from DHET:

  1. Articles in DHET-accredited journals List
  2. Peer-reviewed books/chapters in books
  3. Peer-reviewed published conference proceedings

Creative Research Outputs Criteria

the purpose of this guideline is to assist with the annual submission of DUT’s creative research outputs to the Department of Higher Education and Training.  For the current reporting year n, qualifying submissions that have been exhibited, performed, published or are in the public domain for the period n‐3 will be eligible for this subsidy claim. The creative research output must be original, contribute to new knowledge and enhance understanding in the field.  The DHET will award subsidy to DUT for qualifying creative research outputs in the following subfields:

  • Fine and Visual Arts
  • Music
  • Theatre, Performance and Dance
  • Design
  • Film and Television
  • Literary Arts

The DHET will be working with the National Intellectual Property Management Office (NIPMO) to obtain submission details of institutional Patents. No direct Patent submissions will therefore be required from institutions.
