DUT IMPACT

Durban University of Technology (DUT) officially launched the ENVISION2030 Living Values Framework, comprising five core values: transparency, honesty, integrity, respect and accountability. These values are underpinned by the principles of fairness, professionalism, commitment, compassion and excellence. DUT Publications Officer Simangele Zuma, recently engaged in a conversation with Keshan Govender, a Senior Financial Aid Counsellor at the Financial Aid unit, to delve deeper into the Living Values Framework and ENVISION2030.

Q: Kindly tell me about your role at DUT?

A: “I am Senior Financial Aid counsellor from the Financial Aid unit within the DUT Student Services. I oversee and manage all bursary and sponsorships within the unit both in Durban and Pietermaritzburg.”

Q: How long have you been a member of the DUT family?  

A: “I have been part of the DUT family for the past eight years.”

Q: Amongst the mentioned ENVISION2030 Living Values and Principles, which one do you mostly associate with and why?  

A: “Integrity is a fundamental aspect of ethical conduct, and it is a crucial attribute for both individuals and institutions. Integrity is a prominent aspect of the ENVISION2030 Living Values and Principles as it establishes the basis for trust, accountability, and authenticity. Personally, I am attracted to integrity because it acts as a beacon for making choices and engaging in behaviours that are in line with one’s moral principles. It entails practicing self and interpersonal honesty, even in challenging or unpopular circumstances. Integrity cultivates esteem and trustworthiness, which are crucial in establishing significant connections and attaining shared objectives.”

Q: What are your views on the new  DUT tagline: Creative, Distinctive, Impactful? 

A: “The tagline is set as a driver for the entire DUT community, which guides us in high thinking. It promotes a source for imaginative solutions that underscores the importance of making a meaningful difference which ensures our distinctiveness.”

Q: What is the one thing that most people do not know about you?  

A: “I am religious person, I enjoying learning about my culture.”

Q: In your opinion, how will the ENVISION2030 Living Values Framework benefit DUT? 

A: “The promotion of common values and principles can facilitate the development of a sense of cohesion and inclusion among the DUT faculty, staff and students.”

Q: What do you like to do in your spare time?  

A: “I am currently completing my Master in Business Administration (MBA) degree and I find myself destressing at the gym.”

Q: How do you plan to make a positive impact at DUT?  

A: “By ensuring that I serve the DUT community with the utmost level of professionalism and  commitment. Also, by ensuring that the financial aid information and resources are easily accessible to students and staff.”

Q: What is your daily motivation?  

A: “I am motivated by Benjamin Franklin’s quote that says energy and persistence conquer all things.”

Q: What are your future goals at  DUT? 

A: “I plan to obtain my PhD and progress to a leadership role within DUT.”

Q: If you were granted one wish, what would it be?

A: “A world in which all people are provided with essential provisions.”
